Holiday Clearance Shopping

NEW YORK - JANUARY 08: People walk past a 'Cl...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

I generally do quite a bit of shopping in the days after Christmas. I stock up on wrapping paper, Christmas cards, gift labels, bows, ribbons, decorations, even seasonal clothes and all that jazz. It is a great way to get all you need for next year at great prices. When it comes to all the items I mentioned, I generally wait until prices are 75% off or better. We have a tradition of opening one gift each on Christmas Eve and that gift is always holiday pajamas for the whole family. I always buy these pj's during the Christmas clearance sales and manage to get what all four of use need at what I would pay for one pair of pj's before the holidays. You can really save a lot of money by stocking up now.

The savings don't end with wrapping paper and ornaments though. You can often find toys, board games, and gift sets at a great discount as well. I try to buy a few of the gift sets, you know the bubble bath, hair accessories, make up, etc... and stash them in my gift closet. These make great gifts when your kids are invited to a birthday party at the last minute. Toys and games found at great prices are a wonderful addition to your gift closet as well. Buying smart now can save you quite a bit when compared to having to pick up a last minute gift.

And while you are out hunting for good deals, don't forget about your grocery store. This is a great time to grab holiday hams and turkeys, sometimes even roasts and ducks, at reduced prices. The stores want to get rid of what's left after the holidays, so take advantage of this and grab a few things for your freezer. A turkey or a ham can provide several good meals for most families. Take advantage of these great meat deals that can really help stretch your grocery budget. Baking supplies are often reduced during these sales as well, so grab a few staples for your freezer. Last year I bought flour sugar, spices, chocolate chips, coconut, and chocolate chips all for about 90% off what I normally pay. It really saved us some money in the long run.

Happy shopping!

The Little Drummer Boy

Today I am excited to share with you a wonderful guest post by Janet Morris Grimes. Janet Morris Grimes is a christian wife, mother and writer who has recently relocated through her husband's job transfer to Canton, MI from Nashville, TN. Finding herself unemployed for the first time since she was fifteen years old, she has finally surrendered to her dreams of being a writer, admitting that some dreams chase us down and wrestle us to the ground, until we finally acknowledge their true power.

The Little Drummer Boy

I have this odd little quirk. Call it crazy. Call it focused. Call it annoying. Call it sanity. Call it my attempt to slow down enough to absorb the message of something that matters in a world where we are bombarded with millions of fake and persuasive images daily.

I leave the TV off, and pick one song to listen to on repeat. All. Day. Long.

It's whatever I need to hear on that particular day, and it works for me. The music lays the foundation while the lyrics pierce my soul. I find it comforting; freeing for some reason.

Today, my song of choice was The Little Drummer Boy, by Jars of Clay.

I adored the TV special as a child, until the part where the little lamb was run over by the ox cart. But later, as he is healed and dances to the music of the drummer boy, it caused me to melt every time.
Even back then, I recognized it as the one true Christmas special that had nothing to do with Santa Claus, reindeer, or misfit toys, and found it refreshing. This Christmas special is the only one I remember that focused on giving instead of getting, on Jesus instead of Santa, and on people instead of things.

Today, as I listened to the lyrics, minus the pa rum pa pa pums, I was struck once again by the simpleness of the message of this story.

Come, they told me
A new born King to see
Our finest gifts we bring
To lay before the King
So to honor Him
When we come.

Little Baby
I am a poor boy too
I have no gift to bring
That's fit to give the King
Shall I play for you,
On my drum?

Mary nodded
The ox and lamb kept time
I played my drum for Him
I played my best for Him
Then He smiled at me
Me and my drum.

The Little Drummer Boy is a fictional story, but still so very true.

All Jesus asks from us is whatever we have to offer. For this boy who was hurting, it was a song on a drum. Nothing more. Nothing less.

For me, it is my writing. It is all I have to offer; the only way I know to give back in return.

The song says “so, to honor him, we come.”

So, after listening all day, I get it now.

I will show up, bringing all that I have to offer.

And if he smiles at me? I can think of nothing better than this.

Me and my drum.

Pa rum pa pa pum.

Holiday Gift Guide: The Sims 3

My long time readers will know that I am a huge fan of EA's Sims games. I started with the original Sims and would play every now and then. When the Sims 2 was released, got into gaming hardcore. I loved designing furniture and clothes, building beautiful homes, and raising generations of simmies. My husband says I went a little overboard and maybe he's right. I'd sit down to play for half an hour, then completely lose track of time. But, it worked out okay. Mom needs a break now and again, right?

So, now The Sims 3 is out. Like many others, I anxiously awaited the game's release. What would it be like? Would I enjoy it as much as the first two? So many questions, so much suspense, I was like a little kid on Christmas morning when I finally played for the first time!

About the Game:

The freedom of The Sims™ 3 will inspire you with endless creative possibilities and amuse you with unexpected moments of surprise and mischief!

Create over a million unique Sims and control their lives. Customize everything from their appearances, to their personalities and even the home of their dreams. Then, send your Sims out to explore new locations around town and to meet other Sims in the neighborhood.

Go online to download exclusive content and show off your own creations to the world. With all-new quick challenges and rewarding game play, The Sims 3 gives you the freedom to choose whether (or not!) to fulfill your Sims’ destinies and make their wishes come true.

My Thoughts:
I have very much enjoyed playing The Sims 3. Just like the other two, my kids really enjoy it as well. I am still getting used to the controls on some things. I really like the ability to full customize everything from clothing to wallpaper, and how easy it is to do. I also like that you can choose how hard your Sims work while they are on the job or at school. There are all sorts of little touches that make The Sims 3 unique and naturally, I find a few more cool things every time I play. Ashley loves that your expecting Sims can now go read books on pregnancy and go to the hospital to give birth. Tristen enjoys all the challenges your Sim can be presented with. It offers something for everyone.

I can honestly say this game is a hit with the entire family.I am very much looking forward to future expansion packs. The game is rated Teen, so be aware it may not be appropriate for your entire family. But, if you have gamers on your holiday gift list, especially those who have enjoyed past Sims games, then The Sims 3 would make an excellent gift. This mama really enjoyed it!

You Want Me to Do What?

Happy Monday y'all! Today I bring you an interview with author Lynn Goodwin. Lynn is the author of You Want Me to Do What? Journaling for Caregivers. I found this to be a wonderful book for caregivers. Be it caring for a child, a parent, a spouse, whatever your situation, journaling can really help.

About the Book:
You Want Me to Do What? Journaling for Caregivers offers encouragement, instructions, and over 200 sentence starts to help anyone start putting their thoughts on paper. Those who have tried it, love it, and Sharon Bray, the author of When Words Heal: Writing Your Way Through Cancer has said, "As someone steeped in the therapeutic value of writing during pain and loss, I think B. Lynn Goodwin's book meets a need that has yet to be addressed."

What made you start journaling?

In college I recorded events and thoughts, because I thought it might matter some day. I went back to it when my mother gave me a red, bound notebook. At first, I would copy quotes from the books I was reading for author interviews. Soon I began reflecting on how they related to my life. A year later I read Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way and began doing daily morning pages, writing three pages of longhand about anything. It cleared my mind and made way for creative thought to bubble up. My journal was a tangible, central clearing house for my brain.

What did you learn about yourself through journaling?

I learned to dig beneath my emotions and find the reasons that my negativity came up. I learned how full my life was and is by making gratitude lists. I learned that there is always more to say, and sometimes the idea that has been eluding articulation will rise to the surface in the next sentence. I learned to process events and discoveries rather than letting them slip away. I learned to write freely, without judgments. They have their place, but it is not in my journal.

How can keeping a journal help caregivers?

A journal is a safe, private place to vent, process, analyze, evaluate and rediscover love and hope. Use it to explore hopes and fears. Use it to find the dreams and love that can fade away when caregiving takes up every hour of the day. Use it to record your experience and your stress. University studies have shown that writing reduces stress and improves health. Writing saves lives. Do not underestimate its power.

Do you have any suggestions for those who are new to keeping a journal?

Write every day if you can, even if you only jot down two or three sentences. If you have no time, start with "If I had time, I would have written..."

Don't judge yourself. Remember, there are no mistakes--only new material.

If judgment gremlins creep into your mind as you write, encourage them to sit on the patio or invite them to play on the freeway. They have no business being in the same room where you are journaling.

I do journal, but often think I have nothing to write about. What should we write about when we are uninspired?

One way to start is to look around the room for a sensory image, the dim glow from a lamp with a yellow shade, the flickering of a silent television in a darkened room, the sounds of cicadas on a summer evening, or the aroma of a vanilla candle. Start by describing the sensory image and see where the writing takes you.

A simpler method is to use one of the 200 sentence starts in You Want Me to Do WHAT? Journaling for Caregivers. Finish the sentence and write the next one. You are journaling. Want to give it a try right now? Here are five sentence starts to whet your appetite:

Today, I want…

Sometimes I wonder…

It’s hard to admit…

What if…

I will always love…
If you don't want to write, try finishing the sentence out loud, but turn on a tape recorder first. That way, you'll have a record of your thoughts.

Everyone has great stories to tell, but you are not limited to stories. Make a list. Write a letter. Draw a picture. Write a poem. Who will record your experiences from your point of view if you do not?

What projects are you currently working on?

In addition to publicizing You Want Me to Do WHAT? I am working on the next issue of Writer Advice, www.writeradvice.com, running an e-mail workshop for journalers, doing a little editing, writing about my post-caregiving life in personal essays, and writing the stories of my pre-caregiving days when I was a drama teacher and director in high school and college. It's great to be busy.

Thanks Lynn for doing this interview and sharing with my readers. I wish you the best of luck with your wonderful book!

Holiday Gift Guide: Rugs USA

When thinking about holiday gift giving, why not consider a rug? I for one really enjoy receiving home decor as a gift. Rugs USA offers a great selection of rugs in a variety of styles and prices. I love area rugs, they are scattered through out my home. They look stunning on our hardwood floors and keep our feet warm during the cold winter months.

They offer pretty much every rug you can think of, so finding the perfect one shouldn't be too hard. They have braided, shag, the Martha Stewart collection, and even oriental rugs. I was surprised to find they even carry outdoor rugs and some great choices for the kiddos! All rugs come in a variety of colors in sizes. Their prices are quite reasonable. You can find a great rug for in front of your door or a huge rug to fill your living room. There are lots of options here.

We received this adorable 2x3 rug from their Stockbridge collection.

It is a green-multi stripe that perfectly matches the way we are redecorating our bedroom. Dan has it on the floor on his side of the bed. He loves having it there to step on first thing in the morning so he isn't immediately on the cold wood floor. I love that it is functional and looks great!

So, check out Rugs USA while you are shopping this year. They offer free shipping, along with a 30 day guarantee. I am sure you will find something wonderful for those special folks on your list!

Holiday Shopping at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls

I don't know about you, but when it comes to buying holiday gifts I am looking for the most bang for my buck. I want nice, quality, fashionable gifts without paying a fortune. With lots of people to shop for, this can be quite hard to do. Luckily, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls offer exactly what I'm looking for!

Both stores have a great selection of gifts. You can find toys, clothes, linens, and even gourmet food! I was quite impressed to have found luxurious bath towels that cost less than the scratchy ones at my local dollar store. These stores are great places to find just the right gift for everyone on your list, without breaking the bank.

T.J. Maxx and Marshalls are offering one lucky person a $5,000 shopping spree. To enter, simply click over to their YouTube channel and upload a "Carol-oke" video of you singing one of the three songs they offer. You can also check out everyone else's great vids. Plus, for every video uploaded a donation to charity will be made. So, break out the video camera, have some fun, and sing your heart out! Not only might you win a shopping spree, but you'll be helping others at the same time. So, have fun and good luck!

Holiday Gift Guide: Inspiring DYI Art from Successories

I am sure we all have a loved one that is hard to by far. Around here, it is often our parents and my husband. Every year it seems I have the same problem, trying desperately to come up with a solution to the what to get them problem. Buying a gift just for the sake of having something to give is awful, I want to find special, personal gifts.

Then I heard about the awesome personalized art you can get from Successories. Successories is a company that makes inspirational prints and other great products. I am sure you've seen their work, they are the people to see for inspirational art. Anyway, they now offer you the ability to choose which photo you'd like to use, a quote you love, and even ad a personal message to create a special framed work of art. Your very own DYI art! I thought this is exactly what I need!

So, I started browsing for pictures. It's easy to search by category and I soon found the perfect one. From there I just had to write the quote I wanted to use, decide on a personal message, and that was it! It took me all of maybe ten minutes to create the perfect gift for my husband.

So, what does it look like? Well, I chose this beautiful picture of two cowboys, which fits perfectly into our decor. I did not include a personal message, but did use this quote;

"“What lies behind you and what lies in front of you, pales in comparison to what lies inside of you.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I am so pleased with the finished product. It is a beautifully framed piece of art. I know that my husband is going to love it and it will look great proudly displayed in our home for years to come!
You can make some amazing gifts on this site. I highly recommend them for any of your gift giving needs. Not only do they offer outstanding products, but they ship all gifts within three days of ordering and next day delivery is available anywhere in the U.S. Plenty of time for Christmas! Go check them out for yourself, I just know you will be impressed!

A Christmas Story

Cover of "A Christmas Story (Full Screen ...Cover of A Christmas Story (Full Screen Edition)

I remember writing last year about how much I love Christmas movies. This is a love I've passed on to my children. We watch quite a few flicks during the holidays and it is something we all enjoy. Usually it involves popcorn, hot chocolate, and a lot of snuggling on the couch.

Today, I was telling my neighbor what movie the kids and I were going to watch. She had never heard of it, which surprised me. I consider A Christmas Story a modern day classic. Is it a touchy feely movie? Not at all. But, it provideds some great laughs. Plus, it teaches valuable lessons like not to stick your tongue to a flag pole when it's frozen. Oh, and you don't need a BB gun because "You'll shoot your eye out, kid!"

So, what are some of your favorite holiday movies?

Holiday Heroes

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in New Y...Image via Wikipedia

During the holiday season, please remember to give to those who are less fortunate. I know that so many of us are having a really hard time financially this year, but even a small toy donated to your local Toys for Tots program will help delight a child on Christmas morning. If you can't afford to give anything financially, why not give your time? Tristen has been helping with our local Santa's helpers and having a ball doing it.

There are multiple ways you can help others and give from the heart. Wish Upon A Hero is a great website that connects those who both truly need things and those with wants, to folks willing to help. I've granted several wishes in the time I've been a member. Last year, we were blessed with help from the site in getting the kids some much needed shoes when we were between paychecks. They helped when we had no other way to help ourselves. The wishes you will find there range from food, toys, clothes, blankets, etc. So many folks are having a hard tiem making it right now. You could even just be a card hero, there are lots of lonely folks looking for nothing more than a holiday greeting to brighten their day. So, this might be a group you want to check out.

I know that it is very close to Christmas. But, there are a lot of people out there hoping their Christmas wish will come true. Please think of them as you finish up your holiday shopping.

No, this is not a sponsored post or anything of the sort. Just something I believe in and wanted to share with y'all.

Happy holidays!

Holiday Gift Guide: Charm Girls Club Pajama Party Wii

Back in the day I loved a good slumber party. Me and a few of my best gal pals just watching videos, listening to music, painting our nails, gossiping about boys. Oh and all the dancing, giggling, and pillow fighting....what memories! Now I have a little girl of my own and she loves slumber parties just as much as I did. Girls are so fun!

Anyway, someone over at EA Games knows what girls and pajama parties are all about! Their game Charm Girls Club Pajama Party is a hit with the tween set. You get to make your own character then start playing a ton of fun games. This video game offers lots of mini games that your girl is sure to enjoy. You can jump on the bed, style your hair, and all sorts of other cool stuff. Your character goes around collecting charms and having fun. My 10 year old loves it!

This game is great for girls to play on their own or with a group. I can only imagine what a hit it would be for a slumber party. We may just have to try that soon. Anyway, we enjoyed the game. It kept Ashley entertained for hours. I really liked that it was an enjoyable game made for girls, as I feel there aren't too many of those around. So, definitely keep it in mind this holiday season.

Holiday Gift Guide: For the Naughty Ones on Your List

This holiday season, why not spice things up a bit? Sometimes even nice folks enjoy receiving a gift that's a little on the naughty side. Now, I'm not talking about going over the top here, but consider giving a gift with a little bit of spice to it. Unexpected gifts are often the best gifts.

We recently had the opportunity to try the Body Frosting Gift Crate from Eden Fantasys. This is a wooden crate with raspberry, cherry, mocha, espresso, and original sin flavored edible body paints. It comes with a little paint brush, so you are all ready to paint away! It is packaged attractively and would make a cute gift. Now, about the product itself. The flavors of all the body frostings were very good. They are sweet, but not so sweet that it makes you gag. Plus, they don't feel all gross and sticky on your skin. With it being sweet, this was a nice surprise. They wash off easily with soap and water. Oh, and they make great ice cream toppings! This is a fun gift idea, I might just buy more for Dan's stocking.

I personally would even take something like this to a white elephant gift exchange, but then I'm a little weird. Honestly though, if you and your gal pals do gift exchanges, this might be something to consider. Or if body paint isn't your thing, Eden Fantasys has quite a few massage oils, candles, and even bath products that would make great gifts. They offer so much more than just adult toys.

And guys, they have some really cute lingerie that is sure to be a hit with the special woman in your life. You can find just the right thing whether you want soft and feminine or bold and daring. Their selection is definitely worth checking out.

So, keep Eden Fantasys in mind as you shop this holiday season. They offer great quality products and reasonable prices. Their customer service is top notch. And best of all, everything is shipped in discreet packaging, so you don't have to worry about anyone seeing what you are ordering. I am sure you can find the perfect gift for the naughty folks on your list!

Holiday Gift Guide: Butter Bell Review & Giveaway

One product that I was given the chance to review this holiday season has been a hit with everyone who has seen it. Which item is that? The Butter Bell. This handy addition to the kitchen was the topic of much conversation over the Thanksgiving weekend. It is one of those items that you wonder how you ever got along without.

What is a Butter Bell and how does it work? It is a crock that keeps soft, spreadable butter on hand at all times. You pour 1/3 cup cold water into the crock, pack a stick of softened butter into the bell shaped lid, then put the lid back on. The bell shaped butter container goes into the water, creating an airtight seal. My crock sits on my counter top. I love it so much! Buttering anything is so much easier now that I don't have to battle cold sticks of butter. You can use it for plain butter, or mix up a gourmet butter for your holiday entertaining. So far I've done both with excellent results. In my mind there is nothing better than spreading a sweet butter on a hot biscuit. Yum!

These wonderful crocks would make excellent Christmas gifts. I urge you to check out the Butter Bell website where you will find crocks to fit every decor. They currently have their holiday crocks on sale at a great price. Plus, if you buy any 2 Butter Bell crocks, you will receive a Santa Butter Bell and matching spreader free. That is a really great deal! Any foodie would be thrilled to find one of these nifty crocks under the tree.

Want a Butter Bell of your own? One lucky reader will win the rustic brown antique crock pictured above. To enter simply visit the Butter Bell website, then come back and tell me about which crock you like best or a recipe that caught your eye. This is mandatory for entry.

Holiday Gift Guide: Little Journeys Baby World

You all know I love western themed items. From home decor to clothes, I love it all. I recently discovered a wonderful line of western baby items from Little Journeys Baby World. They offer some of the most adorable country baby items I've ever seen.

About Little Journeys Baby World:
"Caroline Riepler the founder started her first business in 2001 handcrafting (Woodcarving) European Good Luck Witches, which she takes great pride in that Madeleine Albright the former Secretary of State of America has one of her limited editions.

Soon after that in 2003 Caroline became pregnant with her son Stefan and Little Journeys Baby World was born. Unfortunately, things turned bad in 2004 when her Son, Aunt, two Dogs and herself got hit by a drunk driver. It took about 4 years to get back on track again into doing what she loves the most of being with her family and friends, traveling and her dream business Little Journeys Baby World."

Check out this adorable onesis they sent me! It is really cute and I absolutely love the bandanna around the neck. I think it really makes the outfit. Imagine how adorable this would be with overalls or a cute pair of jeans!

Little Journeys Baby World also has other great collections like their International, Traveling, and Heirloom lines. These custom made infant items would make fantastic gifts. They are high quality, absolutely adorable, and unique. Keep these wonderful items in mind when you are doing your holiday shopping this year.

You can win one of the adorable Sheriff Onesis for yourself! Simply pop over to Little Journeys Baby World and look around. Then come back here and tell me your favorite item. This is mandatory for entry! One lucky reader will win a Sheriff Onesis in size 3 to 6 months. Deadline to enter is 12/24/09. This giveaway is open to US addresses only. Good luck!
