So, 10 Little Things I Do To Live a Happier, Healthier Life. none of this is very creative or profound, but every little bit helps, right?
  1. I exercise with my Wii fit at least 4 times a week. This is something i had gotten out of the habit of doing, and I am so glad I started up again. It really does make me feel better.
  2. I drink 10 glasses of water a day. This one is so hard for me because I truly do not like water, but I feel much better when I get my water in.
  3. I've replaced all the sugary snacks in our house with fruits, veggies, nuts, and sometimes yogurt. The kids didn't complain about it nearly as much as i thought they would.
  4. Open up the windows and let some fresh air and sunshine in! This does wonders for lifting your spirits!
  5. Better yet, I go outside a play with my kids. I try really hard to get the kids to spend at least an hour a day outside playing. I figure we need to take advantage of the beautiful weather before the triple digit heat hits!
  6. Getting enough sleep is something I'm trying really hard to do. I have major insomnia, so this is hard for me. But, my body just doesn't function well on 2 hours of sleep, so I'm trying to get to bed at a decent hour.
  7. Relax and take time for yourself. This could be as simple as taking a bubble bath with your favorite chick lit novel. I don't take care of me near enough, but I'm working on it.
  8. Just dance! yes, nothing lifts my mood quite like shaking my booty around the house. It makes you feel better and makes you move all at the same time!
  9. Eating breakfast. This is something I am so bad about. I've been making myself eat breakfast the past few weeks and it has made a huge difference in how I feel. I've got to keep this up and stop skipping meals!
  10. Don't sweat the small stuff. The dishes can wait if my kids want to play Monopoly with Mom. Staying stressed over littler things doesn't help and definitely hurts how I feel. Letting go can be awesome!

The Forgotten Garden

21 April 2010
I recently had the opportunity to read The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. When the book arrived, I was a little overwhelmed by it's size and concerned about whether or not it would hold my interest. This ended up not being a problem, as the book drew me in during the first chapter.

The Forgotten Garden is the story of a little girl lost, family, secrets, and discovery. The characters are well written and believable. The locations are described in such detail, you feel like you are right there. I love a story that paints such a vivid picture that you can "see" it in your mind's eye. This book certainly does that. The Forgotten Garden carried me to distant shores as the story unfolded around characters I really enjoyed. It reminded me of The Secret Garden, one of my all time favorite books.

I highly recommend The Forgotten Garden. It is the perfect novel for when you just want to get lost in a book and forget your cares. I consider it a "bubble bath book", the kind you settle into a tub full of bubbles with and enjoy. Although it is a LONG book, I really am glad I read it.

Guest Post: Ten Mother-Daughter Book Club Favorites by Cindy Hudson

Please welcome author Cindy Hudson to Ramblings of a Texas Housewife!

Cindy Hudson is the author of Book by Book: The Complete Guide to Creating Mother-Daughter Book Clubs (Seal Press, October 2009). She is the founder of two long-running mother-daughter book clubs, and she lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and two daughters. Visit her online at www.MotherDaughterBookClub.com.

I’m often asked what kinds of books I read with my daughters that are appealing to me too. The assumption is that books children like to read can’t possibly hold my interest as well. But I have found that a good story, written well, is enjoyable for all ages. I’ve been lucky enough to run across quite a few of these stories in the book clubs I’m in with my daughters. Here are 10 of the best for you to consider when planning your next mother-daughter book club meeting or even if you’re just looking for a book to read with your child.

The Mother-Daughter Book Club by Heather Vogel Frederick

Megan, Jess, Cassidy and Emma can’t believe their moms signed them up for a book club together. They’re not even sure they like each other, and they’ve got way too many activities already. But as they read Little Women and talk about it at their meetings, they get to know each other beyond the public image they have at school. Ages 9 to 12.

Red Scarf Girl by Ji-Li Jiang

This compelling memoir from a girl who grew up in China during the Cultural Revolution inspires discussion about family loyalty, government betrayals and Chinese history. Ages 10 to 13.

Savvy by Ingrid Law

Mississippi Beaumont can’t wait to get her “savvy” when she turns 13, just like everyone else in her family. But when her dad lands in the hospital hours away from home and her mom stays to help care for him, she’s hopes to discover her new talent and use it to help her family get back together. Ages 9 to 12.

Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko

Moose Flanagan is finding it hard adjusting to life on Alcatraz Island where his dad became a guard in 1935. He hopes to make new friends, but how can he be a regular kid when he has to help care for his severely autistic sister, Natalie? Ages 11 to 13.

Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging by Louise Renison

Georgia is 14 years old and obsessed with how she looks and learning how to kiss a boy. Her parents seem clueless, more interested in her baby sister still in diapers that what’s important in Georgia’s life. Ages 11 to 13.

Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman

As the daughter of a minor English nobleman in 1290, Birdy hardly has a choice of who she’ll marry. Or does she? As each suitor comes to call, Birdy sets out to convince him she’s not a suitable wife. Ages 11 to 13.

Framed by Frank Cottrell Boyce

Dylan Hughes is fighting to keep his family business and his parents’ marriage from falling apart. His town of Manod has seen better days too, and he doesn’t know how to stop the decline. Then world famous art comes to town, opening everyone’s eyes to new possibilities. Ages 11 to 13.

Tangerine by Edward Bloor

Paul loves to play soccer even though he is legally blind. It’s the one thing he’s good at that his athletic older brother doesn’t play. When he rejects his upscale school in Tangerine County, Florida for one attended by disadvantaged kids, he sets in motion changes that will turn his family and his town upside down. Ages 11 to 13.

A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly

It’s the early 1900s and Mattie dreams of going to college and becoming a writer. But she can’t leave her father and sisters, who she’s cared for since her mother died. She takes a summer job at a camp in the Adirondacks hoping to earn money for her escape, and she becomes intrinsically involved in the life of a girl who drowns. Ages 14 and up.

Light Years by Tammar Stein

Maya feels responsible for the suicide bombing in Israel that caused her boyfriend’s death. She wants to start over with a new life at a U.S. college, but finding peace will be harder than adjusting to cultural differences. Ages 14 and up.

Seriously?

20 April 2010

School lunchImage by john.murden via Flickr

Have you taken a good look at a school lunch lately? I admit that I hadn't really paid much attention. I assumed that my kids eating a hot lunch at school had to be better than the sandwich I would pack. Recently I've been doing some research that has led me to believe I was really off the mark on this one.

Did you know that a corn dog, ketchup, cherry Jello, and milk is a balanced meal? Um, excuse me? Yes, according to the school cafeteria this meal provides protein, grain, vegetable, fruit, and dairy. Ketchup is a vegetable? Pickles and salsa are too. Darn, I need to plant a ketchup plant! I'll put it right next to my cherry Jello fruit tree!

As a mother and a childcare provider, this strange concept of fruit and vegetables really concerns me. My childcare kids eat much better than this. Now, I'm not against serving an occasional corn dog with ketchup, but why not serve that alongside some carrot sticks, milk, and say a banana. I prefer actual fruit and vegetables to condiments and fruit flavored snacks.

What do you think? What are the school lunches like in your neck of the woods?

Meg Tilly's Gemma

16 April 2010
I recently read the book Gemma by Meg Tilly. I had no idea before this that Meg Tilly was an author. All I knew was that she is in one of my favorite movies of all time. Well, it turns out she is a fabulous author! Gemma is the story of one young girl's horrific experience with sexual abuse. It is incredibly well written and moved me to tears more than once. Sexual abuse is a subject that hits home with me for several reasons. This book actually changed my life, but that is a subject for another post. Anyway, Gemma is a great book and I urge you to checkit out!

Meg was kind enough to answer some of my questions about the novel and herself. Thank you so much Meg for letting me share this with my readers. It was great getting to work with you!

Who is the audience for Gemma?

I feel the audience for Gemma is anyone who has the guts to read this book. Some people will read it because they have a personal connection to this material, something in the book will resonate with them and in reading it, they won’t feel so alone when wrestling with their own memories. Other people will read it because they like books that take them out of their comfort zone and expand and challenge their way of thinking. And then there are those, who might not be interested in picking up this book, but I pray that they do. These are the people that have sailed through life, unscathed, untouched, by the challenges of rape, sexual abuse and domination, the ones who have had a wonderful, lucky, blessed childhood and life. And I am truly glad that some people do get to experience that sort of safety growing up. I have found that some of those people can be very empathetic and caring, but there are others, who, for lack of experience and understanding, can be quite judgmental when a Jaycee or an Elizabeth or Shaun are lucky enough to survive challenging situations, are brave enough to tough it out, smart enough to find a way to cope with what would break a less strong person. It is my hope that these people will read Gemma, and come away with more understanding and compassion about this type of situation. And maybe that understanding would bleed over into other aspects of their life and they would find themselves seeing and walking through the world in a different way than before.

The language and scenes in Gemma can be quite graphic. What made you
decide to write this way?

Hazen Wood is a violent pedophile, a sexual obsessive. To present his thoughts and language in any other manner would not only be a disservice to the reader, but it would also be unfair to approximate 150 million girls and 73 million boys that are sexually assaulted worldwide every year. This has been my experience with how these men think and speak. It was very important for me not to whitewash and tamp him down.

Gemma Travel, the way Gemma imagined beautiful places to visit even
when her circumstances were so awful, really struck a chord with me.
Is this something you did as a child?

Gemma Travel is something that I devised when I was growing up. It helped a lot.

At times I felt I was reading someone's diary, like this was something
too personal for me to be reading. Is Gemma's story based on your own
life experiences?

I was never thrown in the trunk of a car and kidnapped. There is, however, a lot of me in this book, both in Gemma and in Cindy. It’s like Cindy is the grown up me talking to the young me. My family had a veritable parade of pedophiles tramping through our lives growing up.

I think this is a very brave book. Brave because you wrote about such
a sensitive subject and brave because of Gemma's character. What do
you hope people gain from reading it?

Thank you. It was a difficult book to write. I had terrible nightmares leading up to and during the release of it. It’s like if I could have, I wouldn’t have chosen to write it, but the book chose me, and demanded to be out in the world, so I did everything in my power to make that happen, even though I was terrified.

My wish for this book is for it to serve as a balm, a voice for those of us who have not been able to speak the words that are suffocating us. For people who have been through this kind of thing to realize, in reading Gemma’s story, that there really wasn’t much else she could have done. She was a child. She was physically and mentally overpowered and abused by people who were bigger and stronger than her. And in reading her story, maybe people will be able to see their own personal story in a different light and realize that it wasn’t their fault. That it is not their shame to carry. It belongs in the laps of the pedophiles who perpetrate this type of violence on children.

I would like pedophiles to read it and see more clearly, that not only are the stories and litanies they tell themselves to justify what they are doing wrong. I also want them to see and remember the Gemma in themselves, and realize the cost to what they are doing and to seek help. Many pedophiles were sexually assaulted as children and I believe that in a mixed-up way, they subconsciously do this kind of thing to try to seize back the power that was taken from them as a child.

The reaction of Gemma's mother literally took my breath away. Do you
think her reaction was typical for such a situation?

Unfortunately, I do.

Both Buddy and Hazen use fear to keep Gemma quiet. Fear is a powerful
motivator. Almost 20 years later, I am still afraid to tell anyone
just exactly what abuse I suffered. Do you think it's hard for someone
who has not dealt with sexual abuse to understand why victims don't
just tell someone what is going on?

I do believe it is hard for people who haven’t experienced this to understand the scope and power of the tools these men use to silence and control children. I was forty-five before I was able to come forward with the truth. Forty-five! I had been successful in the world, had raised three children, was in a loving relationship, and STILL I was terrified to say the words out loud, admit it to the world.

My heart hurt when I read that these issues have touched your life as well. I wish that you had had the kind of childhood we both dreamed of.

What advice do you have for your readers who are victims of sexual abuse?

Everyone’s situation is different, and needs to be approached as such. I wish I knew the right answer to this question. I wish there was an easy one-size-fits-all solution. The main thing is, I want my readers who have been/or are victims of sexual abuse to know that they are not alone. That there are WAY more of us out there than even the mind-boggling, heart breaking numbers of the statistics show. That the shame and sick dirty feeling inside is not ours to carry. It belongs in the laps of the men (and sometimes women) who perpetrate this kind of violence on children. I also believe that some of the blame belongs to our justice system that gives these abusers a slap on the wrist and send them back out to abuse again. Did you know that the average pedophile will abuse 360 times in his lifetime?

What led you to start writing?

I was 30 years old. My children were 3 and 5, straddling the age that I was when my stepfather came into my life. And I found, looking into my own children’s faces, that suddenly it was impossible to keep the family lies stuffed down my throat any longer. They needed to come out in one form or another or I would choke on them. So I picked up a pen and started to write. It began as short stories, but ultimately became my first published novel, Singing Songs, which I sold through Dutton/Penguin as 100% fiction, when in truth; it was my memories of growing up.

I've read that you stopped acting to raise your children. Now that they are grown, would you ever go back to acting?

Six months ago, I would have laughed when you asked this question and said absolutely not. However, since that time, a friend of mine was acting and directing an episode of Caprica and asked if I would do a cameo. It was to shoot 2 days after my youngest child was to leave home. I said, okay, why not? We shot the episode and it was so much fun. So, yes, I could see myself doing a little snippet here, a tiny dab there. I can’t see going back to it full-time though, as I enjoy my present life and the freedom I have WAY too much!

Again, huge thanks to Meg Tilly for taking the time to answer my question. I am glad to share Gemma with my readers.

Easter and a Birthday

09 April 2010
Easter was a wonderful day full of food, fun, family, and friends. We had our wonderful neighbors, or rather our self created family, over as well as my mom and step-dad. The kids and adults all played horseshoes and pitched washers in the yard before and after lunch. The day was spent laughing, talking, and of course eating. Monday was more of the same, as it was my husband's birthday. So, we had two days of amazing visiting and feasting.

Anyone who reads my blog very often knows I love to cook, especially during big get togethers. I enjoy cooking and entertaining, but tend to get overwhelmed when all is said and done because the kitchen ends up in a disaster. Luckily, I had some new products in the kitchen to help make my life a little easier.

First of all, I looked like the "hostess with the mostest" as my Nanny would say in this adorable apron from Flirty Aprons. It kept my clothes from getting splattered and made me look cute all at once. I really loved that it has such long ties, making it fit pretty much all sizes. I adore aprons but find many do not fit us plus size ladies. Not a problem with this cute apron!

So, I wore my apron and set about making an array of scrumptious food. When it came time to chill my lemon trifle and to put away my husband's birthday brisket, I was so excited to have CoverMate Food Covers available. They stretch to fit just about anything, so getting them over awkward shaped dishes and foods was no problem at all. They are reusable, which is great too! Much more economical than cling wrap and the like.

After the festivities I was left with a counter full of dirty dishes. I loathe doing dishes, truly I do. I'm one of those people who seem to get drenched by simply washing a glass. I hate when water runs down your arms and gets all over the place. That is why I was so excited about trying out On The Cuff. This product is basically sponge bracelets that keep you from getting all wet. I will tell you I was very impressed with how well they worked. They keep you dry while doing dishes and hubby thinks they'd be great for washing the car too. Honestly, I can think of lots of chores these clever things would be handy for.

All in all it was a fabulous couple of days. These great items helped make all the food prep and clean up so much easier. Don't you just love it when things go smoothly? I hope you and yours had a wonderful holiday too!
