Not so wordless Wednesday - First day of school

29 August 2012
First day of Jr. High!

My phone doesn't take the greatest pics and she wasn't ready to walk out the door at this point, but here she is. I cannot believe my baby is in junior high! Where did the time go? She had been so worried about starting school, but I am happy to report she had a great first day!

The Vacation of of Lifetime

13 August 2012
No, it wasn't my vacation, but that of someone very dear to my heart. Kenzie of Humming Bee Vintage recently visited Ireland and is documenting the trip on her blog. Kenzie is an amazing photographer, always has been. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading about her trip and looking at the amazing images she captured. Go check it out, you will wish you were there, I did anyway.

The chronicles of her Ireland adventure is not the only reason to visit Humming Bee Vintage. Kenzie is a remarkable young woman with many talents. She has a beautiful way with words, is a gifted photographer, and is amazingly creative. She shares awesome how to posts, things she loves, and so much. She also has an Etsy shop that is full of beautiful things. I wish I had a fraction of her creativity and talent.

I've always thought of Kenzie as an "old soul", even as a child she was wise beyond her years. Go check out her blog and you'll see what I mean. I am blessed to have this vibrant young woman in my life. Kenzie, you inspire me in so many ways.

Steak & Gravy Recipe or One More Reason I Love My Slow Cooker

12 August 2012
I could make a list of reasons I love my slow cooker and it would be lengthy. One of my favorite things is you can buy a cheap cut of meat and after a few hours in the slow cooker it's as tender as the expensive stuff. I'm all for good food and saving money! I'm also a fan of easy prep.

This recipe is no frills, basic comfort food. It's also a snap to put together.

Not a great pic because my camera broke and I have to rely on the phone, but you get the idea.

Ingredients
  • 1lb round steak
  • 2 - 3/4 ounce packages beef gravy mix packets - I used mushroom
  • 3 cups water
  • one small onion, finely chopped
Directions:
  • Spray the crock of your slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray or use one of those nifty slow cooker liners.
  • Place meat in crock.
  • In a small saucepan bring water to a boil then add gravy mix. Mix until smooth then pour over steaks in slow cooker.
  • Top with chopped onions.
  • Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.
See how easy that is? It makes a hearty meal with seamed veggies and mashed potatoes. We really enjoyed this for dinner tonight!

Does your family have favorite no fuss meal?

These Tweets Made Me Laugh Out Loud

09 August 2012
Fair Warning: I am about to discuss Fifty Shades of Grey and my opinions on the whole hoopla over casting the movie. If this subject matter offends you please don't read further.

I swore I would never speak of Fifty Shades of Grey on my blog, but after reading Bret Easton Ellis' tweets I cannot keep my mouth shut. My Twitter social circle blew up last night over the possibility of  Matt Bomer playing Christian Grey in the screen adaptation of E.L. James bestseller. What caused the issue? Bret Easton Ellis tweeted his opinions. I'm not knocking his opinion, we are all entitled to one. What made me snort with laughter was the part I highlighted.

What I find ludicrous is the insane popularity of the series. The most popular book on the planet? What has happened to the literary world? No, not a fan of Fifty. My reasons are varied and will likely come in another blog post since I decided to broach the subject. Every time I read or hear something new about the series it's generally accompanied by a sigh of disinterest, a shake of the head, or a massive eyes roll. I'll explain all that another time.

I find many of the opinions expressed in these tweets ludicrous. I'd link to this guy's Twitter account, but frankly don't want to. Let's just keep it at I do not agree with pretty much everything the man said, other than Matt Bomer being sexy and a good actor parts. Calling Bomer a "trophy-husband", what exactly is the point of THAT?

Anyway, why am I so fired up over the casting of a movie I will NEVER go see? The short answer is I'm not. What I am fired up over is the insinuation that Bomer's personal life has anything to do with his ability to play Christian Grey. So, as Bret Easton Ellis expressed his opinions, I will now express mine.

LOS ANGELES, CA - JANUARY 05: Actor Matthew B...LOS ANGELES, CA - JANUARY 05: Actor Matthew Bomer arrives at Relativity Media's premiere of 'Haywire' co-hosted by Playboy held at DGA Theater on January 5, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)I think Matt Bomer is incredibly good looking and a talented actor. Who he goes home to at night doesn't change those two things for me and are none of my business to begin with. If Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal can successfully pull off Brokeback Mountain, then Matt Bomer can be Christian Grey. It's called ACTING. You know, you memorize lines, put on clothes that aren't yours, and pretend to be someone else. A great actor can convince you they are anyone. I've seen actors I adore portray characters I despise. To I care if he gets the role? Nope. I do not plan to rush out to a theater. But, I think Matt Bomer could definitely pull off a convincing "Laters, baby."

And that is my humble opinion.
